St. Lazare

This francophone town with its breathtaking scenery is nestled in the Assiniboine Valley near the Saskatchewan border, in one of the prettiest parts in the province.

The community’s history dates back to the 1830s, when the Hudson’s Bay Company decided to build Fort Ellice, a major fur trading post, to supply traders who were on their way out West.  The town’s founder, Father Jules Decorby, named St. Lazare in honour of the cathedral of Saint-Lazare d’Autun, in France.
