Want to discover an authentic culinary and historical experience? Take it all in at the St. Pierre Jolys Museum, just a short 40-minute drive from Winnipeg!
Follow the guide and enter the world of the Rat River Métis…
The Rat River Métis guided tour begins with an interactive cooking class. Josée Curé, chef and owner of J’em Bistro, will teach you how to prepare one of the two traditional Métis dishes, tourtière (with beef, pork or bison) or bannock (traditional Métis bread). Learn how to perfect this recipe with this hands-on experience and in the case of the tourtière, you can take home your masterpiece at the end of your visit.
After the culinary experience, now it’s time for history! This guided walk on the historic Crow Wing Trail will give you an idea of life in the Rat River Metis region in the early nineteenth century. You may even have the chance to either pull or hop on the traditional Red River cart or carry the bags of goods with a belt to your forehead as travellers did at that time!
Built in the late 1860’s in a typical Red River style, the Maison Goulet welcomed the freighters* who needed rest after their long journeys. Today, it continues to welcome more modern travellers, in a rustic and typical 1860’s setting (with a few modern conveniences). If you want to dive into the history of the freighters for 2 nights, book your stay here:

Did you know that the St. Pierre Museum makes their own maple syrup? The Museum offers you a tour like no other. And if you have a sweet tooth, you will be delighted!
This sweet tour explains the process of how to make maple syrup. You will learn how to identify maple trees, the tools and process to harvest the sugar water, and the different qualities of syrup. You will even have the chance to taste test samples from Manitoba and Quebec, in an authentic sugar shack setting. The tour starts at 11 a.m. by reservation (with a minimum of 4 people) and can be done in English or French. At the end, you will be treated to a maple syrup treat, maple syrup iced tea, and a sample of St. Pierre maple syrup so you can bring that sweet taste at home!

A visit to Manitoba means travelling through Treaty 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 territory and communities signatory to Treaties 6 and 10, the original lands of the Anishinaabeg, Anish-Ininiwak, Dakota, Dené, Iiniwak, and Nehethowuk and the homeland of the Métis Nation. Its ongoing existence is thanks to these ancestors and their present day relatives who continue to love and care for the land.
