{"id":5277,"date":"2022-08-25T16:48:42","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T20:48:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bonjourmanitoba.flywheelsites.com\/regions\/st-leon\/"},"modified":"2022-08-31T13:59:38","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T17:59:38","slug":"st-leon","status":"publish","type":"regions","link":"https:\/\/bonjourmanitoba.com\/en\/regions\/st-leon\/","title":{"rendered":"St. L\u00e9on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before the founding of St. L\u00e9on in 1879, the Pembina Hills region was largely the domain of Aboriginals, French trappers and the M\u00e9tis, who called the area\u00a0<i>prairie ronde<\/i>\u00a0(round prairie) because of its rolling hills.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 1877, many settlers came to the area from Quebec and Ontario. It is believed that Bishop Tach\u00e9 chose to name the new parish Saint-L\u00e9on in honour of the pontiff at that time, Pope Leo XIII.<\/p>\n<p>The landscape of this \u201cround prairie\u201d has undergone some major changes since then. Today, St. L\u00e9on is the site of a major wind farm, Manitoba\u2019s first!<\/p>\n<p>St. L\u00e9on is also known for its annual salamander migration when the little creatures scurry across Main Street by the hundreds during the hot, humid summer days at the end of August.
